Most framed pictures are 'glazed' with 2mm thick float glass, though very large pictures (over 1sqm) may need thicker glass for safety. We can also use non-reflective glass if the picture will hang where reflected light may obscure the image, and valuable pictures may benefit from uv absorbent glass which will reduce the possibility of fading. These specialist glasses do reduce the glass' transparency a little. Oil paintings are usually left unglazed.
