Frequently Asked Questions about picture framing
Most pictures benefit from having a mount between picture and frame. Not only do you need to think about the colour of the mount, but also how wide it should be, whether to have more than one mount, and whether to have surround lines drawn on the mount. Effective mount colours often pick up a colour in the picture (not necessarily the dominant one) and, like the frame, should add to the picture and not fight it. The width of mount between the picture and the frame depends on the size and 'strength' of the picture, while 'double mounting' gives extra depth and allows special effects (see the galleries for examples). Surround lines can help draw out delicate pictures and are often used with watercolour paintings.
